VISIT TO THE USA:
Ansie and I again visited the USA from 5 – 14 January 2008. We first went to Robert and Mary-Louise Hagler in Augusta, Georgia for a few days. Robert and Carl Necthman (together with Mary-Louise and Sam) set up a splendid house-function that was attended by about 25 – 30 people. It was a wonderful evening where we had a change to meet some new friends.

We also went fishing with William Sasser from Sasser’s Guide Service, for Stripe Bass. What a wonderful day we have experienced. Ansie and I have enjoyed this expedition thoroughly. We caught more than twenty fish - Ansie caught the biggest, but I still believe I am the better fisherman! We had wonderful weather and again a day we will never forget. Robert and William, thank you very much for a wonderful day.

We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to Rob Pavey from The Augusta Chronicle for the wonderful article about hunting in Namibia. It is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much for all the invitations to spend time with you. We regret that it is unfortunately not possible for us to accept all the invitations. We regret that we disappoint some of you by not being able to visit with you. Please know that we want to but time does not always allow it. Thank you for the understanding in this regard.

DALLAS SAFARI CLUB CONVENTION: 2008
The Dallas Safari Club Convention is our highlight every year – to see so many of our friends / clients again. This year more than 16 of our friends visited us at the Dallas Safari Club convention. Thank you so much for your friendship – this means a lot to both of us.

A special thanks to all of you that helped at the booth. You played a major role in getting so many bookings for us. This year was the most successful year we have ever experienced. Thanks to all of you for your assistance. Your loyal support and commitment towards Kowas Adventure Safaris are being appreciated.

A special thanks to Larry Eulert. He brings all our booth and marketing material from Oklahoma to Dallas. Larry is driving us where ever we need to be, he makes all the arrangements prior to our arrival, helps us setting up the booth and breaking it down. He again stores the marketing material for us until the next Convention. A warm thank you also to Gene Mills who have assisted us in breaking down the booth.

When ever we requested Larry throughout the year to sent brochures and DVD’s to potential clients, he is always willing to do so. Larry, thank you for assistance. We appreciate your time and dedication tremendously.

To all of our new clients whom have booked with Kowas Adventure Safaris during the 2008 USA marketing campaign, THANK YOU for choosing Kowas Adventure Safaris. Thank you for the trust in us. We can assure you that the Kowas team will do everything in our power to make your African experience unforgettable.

We are looking forward in welcoming you to our beautiful country Namibia, a land of contrasts and wide open spaces…!

2008 HUNTING SEASON:
We expect a good hunting season. The wildlife is in abundance. The rainfall to date is low, but substantial rain from middle February, March and April 2008 has been predicted.

I expect that we are going to work hard for good kudu trophies and eland (always), but that is what hunting is all about. The harder it gets the bigger the satisfaction and enjoyment.

The Dordabis conservancy conducts game counts twice yearly: normally during April and October. Game counts are done through normal game drives along the road throughout the conservancy. Animals seen are then registered accordingly. It is estimated that this method provides a representation of 40% of the actual wildlife population.

The wildlife physically counted in the conservancy (400 000 acres) during October 2007, was as follows:

Kudu: 1 030
Oryx (gemsbok): 1 680
Red Hartebeest: 1 117
Springbuck: 3 384
Steenbok: 317
Duiker: 118 (this nocturnal specie is difficult to see)
Blesbok: 96
Warthog: 317
Hartmann Zebra: 50 (aka Mountain Zebra)
Burchell zebra: 89
Blue wildebees: 240
Black wildebees: 200
Impala: 186
Giraffe: 61
Ostrich: 59
Eland: 66
Klipspringer: 19
Waterbuck: 52

KUDU RABIES:
During 2007 I have reported in my previous newsletter about the mortalities experienced amongst Kudu due to the kudu rabies virus. I am glad to confirm that mortalities stopped since November 2007. The kudu population is looking good currently.

This virus effected the kudu population every 20 – 25 years. We believe it is a result of over population which then co-inside with draughts like we have experienced last year.

FLIGHT OPTIONS TO NAMIBIA VIA EUROPE:
For our new clients, we thought it necessary to provide you with the following information regarding flight options to Namibia.

Europe is providing direct flights to Windhoek International Airport, Namibia. Airlines such as LTU and Air Namibia could be considered. LTU fly out of Dusseldorf while Air Namibia is flying out of London (Gatwick airport) or Frankfurt.

If you consider this option, it would be the best to consult with your travel agent, who would be able to assist you in making reservations with Delta airline – or any airline of your choice – from the USA to Europe. Sky miles could be used for this purpose. From Europe, you could consider flying direct into Namibia.

To you who consider flying Air France from Atlanta to France, please check the rifle and ammo restriction with your airline PRIOR to your departure date. Air France does not allow for rifles and ammo to fly simultaneously on the same flight. Air France further more has restriction on certain rifle calibers. Be aware of this restriction!

If you need any further information, do not hesitate to give us an indication where we could be of more assistance.

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS LUGGAGE HANDLING:
We have reported in our previous newsletter that over the recent past there has been a significant increase in luggage delays or lost luggage on the flights arriving from Johannesburg to Windhoek. We are sad to report that nothing has changed about this situation. It is still the same. (It happened once again to our first clients whom have arrived to Namibia on 30 January 2008 via Johannesburg.)

TIPS FOR PREPARING HAND LUGGAGE:
In the event that you are going to fly with SAA from Johannesburg to Windhoek, do not panic. There are ways and means to handle the potential delayed luggage issue by preparing your hand luggage properly.

  • Travel light – Kowas has a daily laundry service;
  • Travel with your hunting boots – it prevents you from being out in the hunting field with your best pair of shoes…
  • Add at least one set of hunting clothes in your carrying on – it is better to have a camouflage shirt on than a bright color t-shirt…
  • If you are travel as a group - more than one person, share one suitcase with other people. By doing this, at least some of you would have some clothes to wear until your other luggage arrive.
  • If you like gatchets (binocular, etc), add it to your carrying on’s.
  • Always carry your medication with you.
  • Leave a copy of your travel schedule, flight and contact details in your bags…

ADDRESS IN NAMIBIA:
Please ensure that you have the address - where you are going to stay in Namibia - handy when you arrive at the Windhoek International Airport. You will be requested to complete the arrival form and also to complete the address, which is as follows:

Farm Kowas no 233, Dordabis, Windhoek district.
Tel: (062) 581558 or Cell: 081 211 4900

In the event where you would file a claim for lost luggage, above information is what you need in order for the delayed luggage to be delivered to your doorstep.

INFORMATION TO BE AWARE OF:
Ensure that you get acquainted with the following information:

  • Rifle and/or ammo restriction of your airline
  • Claim procedure of your airline for delayed, damaged or lost luggage.
  • On the passengers flight ticket are the “Conditions of Contract for Passengers” which also make reference to the baggage.
  • Each airline has a notice of baggage liability limitations and the procedure to follow.

RECIPE:
It is a pleasure to share with you one of my favorite desert recipes. It is named after a Springbok rugby player, which was born and rised in Namibia: JAN ELLIS

JAN ELLIS DESERT:

This desert is versatile and could be served with:
  • whipped cream
  • custard
  • as cake with coffee/tea

INGREDIENTS and METHOD:

Mix:     1 teaspoon Carbonate of Soda with ½ cup of milk

Mix together:
  • 200g self raising flour
  • 1 ml salt
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 6 teaspoon apricot jam
  • 2 Eggs
  • 5 Teaspoon butter

Add the milk mixture (1st mixture) to the 2nd mixture.

Butter an oven dish (or spray it).
Put mixture in dish.
Bake for 25 – 30 minutes in moderate oven.

Mix (and boil for 5 minutes) the following sauce. It needs to be put over the bake after you took it from the oven:
  • 1 Cup of water
  • 1 Cup of milk
  • 1 Cup of sugar
  • 1 Cup of butter
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla essence

Add ALL the sauce over the desert immediately when you take it from the oven.

Enjoy a little sweetness from Namibia!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

Vision is by its very nature focused on the future. But any leader who neglects to tie in the past and present is missing an opportunity…!
