KOWAS HAS STARTED THE 2005 TROPHY HUNTING
SEASON:
The Strauss family wants to extend a special thanks to each and every
one of you whom have taken the time to respond to the first issue of the
Kowas News. We appreciate the overwhelming feedback. Remember that your
advice, comments and contributions are always being appreciated. We are
only an e-mail away: kowasadv@iafrica.com.na Keep us informed on what
you want to see in the next issue…
The 2005 trophy hunting season has started off for Kowas. We are looking
forward to a fully booked 2005. The Kowas team has welcomed with renewed
energy and enthusiasm the Fleck couple as the first clients to Kowas for
2005.
Farm Kowas has received good rain during the past rainy season. Each
drop which we still could receive for the rest of the rainy season, would
be an extra bonus. The vegetation looks promising. The grass is green
and in seed at the moment, which cause hay fever / allergies for the “sensitive
noses”…but the fact is: if you want to experience the rainbow,
you need to put up with mud! The trophy quality of the game species at
Kowas is exciting… It is a privilege to share it with all of you
on a regular basis on http://www.huntinamibia.com selection: photo gallery.
Watch this space for the regular update. We have managed with the first
clients that the photos are being published before they have left Kowas!
Kowas Adventure Safaris’ believe is that we have not inherited
the Kowas earth from our fathers, but we are borrowing it from our children…
CONGRATULATIONS, DANIE
Kowas wants to share the news with you that Danie has been elected as
the new President of the Namibian Professional Hunting Association (NAPHA)
on a Special General Meeting which was held in Windhoek on 4 April 2005.
This special meeting was called for after the unexpected resignation of
the previous Napha President. Danie has been elected for the period April
2005 – Feb 2007. Danie, the Kowas team congratulates you. We are
behind you – solid as a rock. We are all proud of you…!
MATHEUS THEOFELUS: CAR ACCIDENT
We regret to inform you that Matheus Theofelus – the back bone of
Kowas - was involved in a motor car accident on 27 February 2005 while
driving on the gravel road between Kowas and Dordabis. He broke his ribs
on three places while his pelvis is broken on four places. He will be
hospitalized for a couple of more weeks, after which he will be released
for rehabilitation. The medical personal predict that he could be back
in the hunting field not before September 2005. We thank you all for the
e-mails and good wishes which Matheus is receiving on a regular basis.
Thank you also for remembering him in your prayers. Kowas is missing Matheus
a lot and can not wait to have him back where the rest of the Kowas crew
would assist him in his rehabilitation process. We realize and are realistic
about the fact that it would be a long road to recovery. Matheus, we know
you can do it, buddy. Thank you for listening to the doctors and medical
personal in your road to recovery. Thank you for taking good care of yourself.
We are proud of you.
SPECIAL MENTIONING: 4th TIME TO KOWAS
We want to make special mentioning of Michel Maltrud, whom is planning
to visit Kowas for the 4th time… Michel, you became part of the
Strauss family. We have warned you before: once Namibia get under your
skin (in your blood), it is impossible to get rid of it. The Eland - which
is outstanding on your wish list - is waiting for you in Namibia.
Michel has harvested the following trophies with Kowas:
Kudu oryx springbuck red hartebeest blue wildebeest
Klipspringer common impala, burchell zebra mountain zebra
Blesbuck
The Kowas crew is looking forward welcoming you back to the land of contrast
and wide open spaces. The sand will blow away your footprints, but the
memories with you will remain in our hearts forever. Thank you for your
loyal support towards Kowas.
FEEDBACK FROM A SPECIAL FRIEND:
We want to share the following feedback which we have received from a
special friend, Brent Allen, with you. His family joined him on a family
safari during 2004. Brent, thank you for the opportunity that Kowas could
be part of your African experience. It is a privilege knowing you as a
family.
Thanks for sending out the newsletter! I really enjoyed reading it -
almost made me feel like I was right there at the pool beside you! You
probably get tired of hearing this, but you have given me such great memories.
I find myself thinking of our trip all the time. When I need a break from
work, I let my mind carry me back to hunting those Oryx - trying to get
within rifle range without being spotted, moving from bush to bush, then
trying to make sure I'm putting the scope on the right one. The cold morning,
just grabbing a bite to eat, ready to start the hunt and see what we might
run into. Making that small fire and cooking lunch out in the field. Even
the smallest details are as clear as if they happened yesterday.
Of all the stories I tell my friends (understand most are not hunters),
I think they are most fascinated with the seals from the seal & dolphin
cruise. You just don't get to do things like that here in the states.
Over here, you sit and watch the animals in a show or at a zoo, but you
never get to interact with them.
For me, the animals and the trophies were just unbelievable. To compare
my success at Kowas to hunting in the US - well, there is no comparison!
I don't know of anyone who can honestly say they took 4 or 5 trophies
in the US in one week that would be anywhere close to the quality of mine
from Kowas - it just isn't possible.
But as good as the animals and trophies were, it was your hospitality
that really made the trip special. You made us feel like we were royalty
and best friends - at the same time. That is not an easy thing to do,
but your family and staff made it look easy. I guess I am now ruined,
because if I go hunting with another outfit, I'm going to be expecting
treatment like I received at Kowas - and I'm pretty sure I won't get it.
So I guess I will just have to go hunting with you again.
MESSAGE FROM A 13 YEAR OLD HUNTER TO OTHER YOUNG POTENTIAL HUNTERS:
My name is Jacques Strauss. I have been living on a farm in Namibia most
of my life. I am 13 years old and learning hard to be a Professional Hunter
(PH), like my father. I want all of the children of any age to come and
experience hunting with Kowas here in Namibia. I love Kowas a lot! I love
hunting. Hunting is a passion for me: to see the game in the nature, it
is an experience… Words can not describe it. You have to experience
it to believe it. I want to invite children to come with their parents
to experience a Namibian safari. A Namibian safari not only to say: “I
have been to Africa!” or to come and play a Game boy in Namibia,
but to experience a safari the traditional way…to see, hear, smell,
experience the African bush. Namibia is not only for mom’s and dad’s
for safari, but for children too. I can share my own experience with you:
I have shot my first Oryx when I was 9 years old. I can still remember
the hunt in detail: my emotions, the smell, the sight, the feeling. I
am now 13 years old. Therefore: I invite you to come and hunt with Kowas.
If I have experience my first hunting experience at an age of 9, so can
you. It is affordable…
Hope to see you one day at Kowas, Namibia.
USA VISIT – 2005:
How can we say THANK YOU to you whom have stopped by at the Kowas booth
during our visit to Georgia, SCI, March 2005? When words escape, flowers
speak, therefore: a bunch of flowers to each and every one of you whom
have taken the time to stop by at the Kowas booth to say hello and introduced
your loved ones to us. Thank you for your support and loyalty at all times.
Larry Eulert, Brad Frost, Scott Carroll and Larry Kolek whom have assisted
us in the booth, thank you very much. To Kirby Walker, Bill, Mary, Elize

To you who could not make it but has been with us in your thoughts, thank
you very much. You are all special to us.
Travel is every time more than the seeing of sights, it is a change that
goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living. We are already looking
forward to the USA trip during 2006…
CLARIFICATION ON POLICY ON BRINGING FIREARMS INTO NAMIBIA
Due to a lot of enquiries that we receive on which firearms is allowed
to be brought into Namibia, we want to bring the following to your attention:
1. Firearms that may enter Namibia are the following:
- Bolt-action rifles of any caliber for the explicit purpose of hunting.
- Double of all calibers for the explicit purpose of hunting. These would
include configurations of doubles such as side-by-side shotguns or combinations
calibers, over and under shotguns or combinations calibers.
- Shotguns, pump action and semi-automatic other than the riot, military
or policing type for the explicit purpose of hunting, and;
- Semi-automatic rifles with magazine capacities not exceeding five rounds,
for the explicit purpose of hunting.
2. No firearms for any reason other than hunting and / or organized and
controlled bisley shooting will be allowed into Namibia. Pistols, revolvers
and/or automatic firearms in accordance with the provisions of the Nature
Conservation Ordinance 1975, (No 4 of 1975) Section 42 that places restrictions
upon firearms and ammunition will not be allowed into Namibia.
3. Where persons wish to bring unconventional firearms or weapons into
Namibia for hunting purposes, application to the Inspector General should
be made timorously so that the merit of each unique case may be decided
upon.
4. The crux of the matter is thus planning and communication. Where hunters
receive invitations to hunt in Namibia, all the relevant information is
to be presented at the legal ports of entry in order to facilitate the
visitor’s entry into Namibia. Where visitors, however, do not comply
with these instructions, their firearms will be kept in safekeeping till
they exit Namibia, and in these instances, a receipt will be issued to
them in relations to their firearms.
5. No problem is envisaged if a hunter brings in more than one rifle
as long as the rifles are brought in relations to the type of game, i.e.
larger calibers for big game and small calibers for small game and huntable
birds.
RIFLE IMPORT REGULATIONS – IN TRANSIT PASSENGERS
(Transiting South Africa)
It seems that a lot of confusion exists regarding importation of firearms
to South Africa. If you need any further information regarding this issue,
do not hesitate to contact us for the facts. We are only an e-mail away
to assist in this regard: kowasadv@iafrica.com.na
Please be aware of the fact that there is a difference in rifle handling
in South Africa for clients who is IN TRANSIT or clients who is staying
over in South Africa. Kowas Adventure Safaris is prepared to assist you
with supplying you with the necessary information.
TRAVELING TIPS:
We want to share some traveling tips with you:
1. It is critical that you check with and confirm with the airline/s
involved before departure to make sure what their procedure is for the
transfer of baggage and/or firearms.
2. If the airline does transfer your baggage/firearms, and you have booked
them through to the final destination, and you stay in the in-transit
area and do not clear South African customs, then you need not go through
the temporary import process.
3. If your airline company will not transfer your baggage/guns to your
connecting airline/flight, then you must collect your baggage/firearm/s
and go through the entire entry process. If this is the case, the South
African limitations, requirements, etc. will apply.
KOWAS WISHES:
